Taking new pictures
To complete the movement Arieke updated pictures from the official integration exam herself. By sending these as well as the results of her research to several Dutch media, she influenced the public opinion, because everyone can relate to a picture and pictures are symbols for content. Debates online were followed by a political debate in The Hague.
Photo expedition with Members of Parliament
By lending Members of Parliament a camera, Arieke forced them to think in a very practical way about a different road to integration. During the photo expedition, assignments were given which were inspired on categories from the current integration course. Updating pictures for the categories 'public transport' or 'economy' was easy. But MPs discovered that photographing a fluid identity is difficult. And that was exactly the message we want to be picked up: stop testing fluid norms and values and start working towards big scale buddy systems.
Mission complete!
After the debate in The Hague, a letter from the responsible Minister Koolmees to the Parliament followed (02-07-2018). In this letter, the minister promised improvements for the Dutch integration system, including updating the outdated material.
